Admiral Mike Mullen

Admiral Mike Mullen was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — the highest-ranking officer in the U.S. Armed Forces and the president’s principal military advisor — in 2007-11. Before that, he served as chief of Naval Operations.

During his career, he commanded the USS Noxubee, USS Goldsborough, USS Yorktown, the George Washington Battle Group and the U.S. Second Fleet. His last operational assignment, in 2005, was as commander, NATO’s Joint Force Command Naples/commander U.S. Naval Forces Europe, leading the Alliance’s peacekeeping operations in the Balkans and its training mission in Iraq.

He guided the U.S. Armed Forces through difficult phases in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and oversaw humanitarian operations from Haiti to Japan.

The first chairman of the Joint Chiefs to have attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School, Mullen has a unique perspective on America’s global position and how the U.S. economic health affects national security. His dedication to the diversity and integrity of the U.S. Armed Forces informed his decision to support repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Passionate about the welfare of our troops, Mullen continues to work on support initiatives, including suicide prevention and veteran employment.

Robert Ballard

Deep-sea archaeologist, Robert Ballard, is perhaps best known for his discovery of the Titanic. He also found the wrecks of the German battleship Bismarck, the USS Yorktown, the nuclear sub Thresher (on a secret mission for the Navy, for which the Titanic was his cover story) and John F. Kennedy’s PT-109.

Ballard was on the first team to view hydrothermal vents and to understand how life could survive in deep black waters, under extreme pressure and at extreme temperature. During his long career, he has conducted more than 120 deep-sea expeditions and logged more hours in the deep than any other marine scientist in the world.

Ballard is president of the Institute for Exploration, scientist emeritus at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, director of the Center for Ocean Exploration at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography and an explorer-in-residence for the National Geographic Society.

His new ship of exploration, the E/V Nautilus, explored the Aegean, Black, and Mediterranean seas in 2012. Ballard has pioneered distance learning in classrooms around the world. Through his JASON Project, 1.7 million students a year join scientists, virtually, as they experience the thrill of exploration and discovery.

Jon Huntsman

Jon Huntsman has lived a varied and remarkable life in business and public service. He has served in the administrations of four U.S. presidents; first, as a staff assistant to President Reagan. Later, in 2012, he was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.

Twice elected Utah’s governor, he cut taxes, reduced waste and grew the state’s economy. Under his leadership, Utah ranked No. 1 in the nation in job creation and was named the best-managed state by the Pew Center.

Huntsman, who speaks Mandarin fluently from his time as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, also has extensive foreign policy experience. As U.S. ambassador to Singapore, he was the youngest head of an American diplomatic mission in a century. As U.S. trade ambassador under President George W. Bush, he helped negotiate dozens of free trade agreements with Asian and African nations.

President Obama’s ambassador to China, Huntsman occasionally butted heads with the Chinese government as he stridently advocated for the release of American citizens wrongfully imprisoned.

Huntsman serves on various corporate boards, is a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution and chairman of the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
